Training Visa (407): Apply from Outside Australia from 12 Nov 2026
The Department of Home Affairs has announced a change to where people can apply for the Training visa (subclass 407). Here is a neutral summary of what the official page says, checked on 5 November 2026.
What is changing
From 12 November 2026, applicants must be outside Australia when they apply for a Training visa and when the visa is granted.
Home Affairs says an application lodged while you are in Australia will be invalid, even if ImmiAccount lets you submit it.
A decision that an application is invalid cannot be merits reviewed.
Valid applications lodged before 12 November 2026 are assessed under the rules in place when they were lodged.

Who this may affect
People who are currently in Australia on another visa (for example, a Student or Working Holiday visa) and were planning to apply for a Training visa with a sponsor. The page also notes that an invalid lodgement may affect your visa status, and that if your current visa has already expired you may not be eligible to apply for another visa.
What the Home Affairs page suggests
Check when your current visa expires and plan to leave Australia before then.
Wait until your sponsor is approved as a temporary activities sponsor and has an approved Training visa nomination for you (unless your sponsor is a Commonwealth agency).
Gather your documents and check whether you need a health examination.
Once outside Australia, lodge through ImmiAccount and respond quickly to any requests for information.
You may travel to Australia on another valid visa while the application is processed, but you must follow that visa's conditions. A Bridging visa is not granted for applications lodged outside Australia.
Do not book return travel based on an expected grant date, as processing times vary. Lodging an application does not guarantee a grant.
Are you on a Working Holiday visa (417/462)?
