Blue Mountains Day Trip from Sydney by Train: A Budget Guide
The Blue Mountains are one of the easiest big nature trips from Sydney — and you don't need a car. Here's how to do it in a day on a budget.
Getting there by train
Trains run on the Blue Mountains Line from Central Station (also stopping at Strathfield, Parramatta, Blacktown and Penrith). According to Visit NSW, express trains take about 90 minutes to Katoomba, and all-stations trains up to about 2 hours.
Pay with an Opal card or tap on and off with your contactless credit or debit card.
Check live times on Transport NSW before you leave — weekend trackwork can change services.
Getting around Katoomba
From Katoomba station you can take local buses or the hop-on hop-off Blue Mountains Explorer Bus, which loops around Katoomba and Leura to the main lookouts. The most famous stop is Echo Point, where you'll see the Three Sisters rock formation.
A simple one-day plan
Catch an early train from Central.
Head to Echo Point for the Three Sisters views.
Walk part of a cliff-top track (pick one that matches your fitness and the weather).
Grab lunch in Katoomba or Leura village.
Train back to Sydney in the late afternoon.
Tips
It's usually cooler in the mountains than in the city — bring a jumper and rain jacket.
Wear proper walking shoes; some tracks have steep stairs.
Carry water and check track closures on the NSW National Parks website before you go.
