Can You Study on a Working Holiday Visa (417/462)? The 4-Month Rule Explained
If you're in Australia on a Working Holiday visa (subclass 417) or a Work and Holiday visa (subclass 462), you might be wondering whether you can use some of your time to study. The short answer: yes — but only for a limited time.
The rule: up to 4 months of study or training
According to the Department of Home Affairs, mandatory visa condition 8548 limits Working Holiday Makers to a maximum of 4 months of study or training during their stay in Australia. Home Affairs also explains that this applies per visa, so if you hold a second or third Working Holiday visa, you get another 4 months on each one.
Online courses you take with an overseas provider don't count toward this limit — but most people looking for an Australian qualification will study with an Australian provider, so the 4-month limit is the one to plan around.
Why the 4-month limit matters when you choose a course
Many vocational courses run for 6 to 12 months or longer. On a Working Holiday visa, a course like that simply won't fit. When you compare options, check:
Total course length — the whole study plan, including assessments, should fit within 4 months.
Work placement — some courses (like Individual Support) include compulsory placement hours. Make sure placement is scheduled inside the same window.
Start date vs. visa expiry — leave enough time to finish before your visa ends.
Delivery and timetable — days, hours and campus locations vary by school.
