Looking for free things to do in Sydney this November? Two big cultural events are coming up, and both are mostly free to enjoy. Here's what you need to know, based on official sources.

Powerhouse Parramatta opens (from Saturday 7 November)

Powerhouse Parramatta, a new museum on the banks of the Parramatta River in Western Sydney, opens on Saturday 7 November 2026, the NSW Government has confirmed.

  • The NSW Government says most of its exhibitions will be free.

  • A 23-day opening festival is planned, featuring a veteran astronaut, an acclaimed industrial designer and local Western Sydney acts.

  • Some talks and events may need a ticket. Check powerhouse.com.au for the program and any bookings.

Parramatta is easy to reach by train from the city, and the area has plenty of affordable places to eat.

Head On Photo Festival (6–29 November)

Head On Photo Festival returns to Sydney in 2026. It runs from 6 to 29 November across Sydney, with free outdoor and gallery exhibitions.

  • Bondi Beach promenade (Queen Elizabeth Drive, Bondi Beach)

  • Bondi Pavilion Gallery

  • Paddington Reservoir Gardens (251–255 Oxford Street, Paddington)

  • venues in the Sydney CBD

The festival says you can "discover exceptional photography for free". The launch party on Friday 6 November is ticketed.

A free day out idea

  1. Morning: walk along the Bondi Beach promenade to see the outdoor Head On prints, then visit the Bondi Pavilion Gallery.

  2. Lunch: bring a picnic or grab something simple near the beach.

  3. Afternoon: bus to Paddington Reservoir Gardens for more photography in a heritage setting.

  4. Another day: take the train west to Parramatta to explore Powerhouse Parramatta during its opening festival.

  • Design and science lovers: Powerhouse Parramatta's opening program includes a veteran astronaut and an acclaimed industrial designer.

  • Anyone on a budget: most exhibitions at both events are free.

  • Pair the Bondi exhibitions with the Bondi to Coogee coastal walk.
