Holding a Working Holiday visa (subclass 417 or 462) and curious about working in health care? HLT33115 Certificate III in Health Services Assistance is one of our Fast-track courses. This guide explains how the qualification is built and what its two specialisations mean, based on the national training package.

What the qualification covers

According to training.gov.au (Release 5), HLT33115 is for workers who use factual, technical and procedural knowledge to assist health professionals in caring for clients. The work involves direct client contact under supervision.

The packaging rules are:

  • 15 units in total: 7 core units and 8 electives

  • at least 6 electives must come from the listed electives, and up to 2 can come from other endorsed training packages or accredited courses if they suit the job

  • no licensing requirements applied at the time of publication

The two specialisations

  • Operating theatre technician: includes all 3 Group A electives. It focuses on assisting in the operating theatre environment.

  • Assisting in nursing work in acute care: includes all 5 Group B electives. It focuses on helping nurses care for patients in acute settings, such as hospital wards. This specialisation requires at least 80 hours of work, as set out in the unit's assessment requirements.

Some schools deliver the qualification without a specialisation, so ask which version is on your offer.

Which one suits you?

  • Interested in how operating theatres run, including equipment and infection control? The operating theatre stream may suit you.

  • Prefer working alongside nurses and patients on the ward? The acute care stream may suit you.

  • Still deciding between care courses? Our care course comparison looks at Individual Support, Health Services Assistance and Early Childhood side by side.
