Holding a Working Holiday visa (subclass 417 or 462) and interested in care work? CHC33021 Certificate III in Individual Support is one of our Fast-track courses. One question we hear a lot is: what's the difference between the Ageing, Disability, and Ageing and Disability versions? Here's a plain-English guide based on the national training package.

What the qualification covers

According to training.gov.au, CHC33021 is for people who provide person-centred support in community, home or residential care, following an individualised plan and working under supervision in a team. People may need support because of ageing, disability or other reasons.

The packaging rules (Release 1) are:

  • 15 units in total: 9 core units and 6 electives

  • at least 3 electives must come from Group A (Ageing) or Group B (Disability)

  • at least 120 hours of work, as set out in the assessment requirements

The three specialisations

  • Ageing: includes all Group A electives (CHCAGE011, CHCAGE013 and CHCPAL003), covering support for older people, including people living with dementia and people receiving palliative care.

  • Disability: includes all Group B electives (CHCDIS011, CHCDIS012 and CHCDIS020), covering community participation, independence and person-centred support for people with disability.

  • Ageing and Disability: includes all six Group A and Group B electives, so it covers both areas.

Which ones are offered depends on the school, so ask which specialisation is on your offer.

Which one suits you?

  • Prefer working with older people in residential aged care or home care? Ageing may suit you.

  • Interested in supporting people with disability at home or in the community? Disability may suit you.

  • Want to keep both doors open? The combined Ageing and Disability option covers both.

How the Fast-track option works

For Working Holiday visa holders, we help you compare Fast-track intakes. Course length, timetables and intakes are set by each provider, and you'll need to complete classes, assessments and work placement on schedule. Check your own visa conditions in VEVO before you enrol.
