Short Courses vs a Cert III: What WHMs Should Know
Updated: 2 days ago
Many Working Holiday Makers start their trip with a few short tickets, such as an RSA, a White Card or First Aid. Others want something bigger: a full Certificate III. Both can be useful, but they are very different things. Here's a plain-English comparison.
Short courses: quick, specific, often required
Short courses usually cover one unit of competency. They prove you can do one specific task safely, and some jobs require them by law.
RSA (Responsible Service of Alcohol). The national unit is SITHFAB021 Provide responsible service of alcohol. Each state adds its own rules. In NSW you get an interim certificate valid for 90 days, then apply for a competency card through Service NSW. The card is valid for 5 years. In Victoria, staff who serve alcohol need a current RSA certificate, and a free online refresher is required every 3 years.
White Card. The national unit is CPCWHS1001 Prepare to work safely in the construction industry. It's the general construction induction card, and Safe Work Australia says white cards are recognised Australia-wide. In NSW, a card may no longer be treated as valid if you've been out of the industry for more than two years.
First Aid and CPR. HLTAID011 Provide First Aid and HLTAID009 Provide cardiopulmonary resuscitation follow Australian Resuscitation Council guidelines. Workplace guidance says to refresh CPR every year and renew first aid every three years.
Because rules differ between states, check the official page for the state where you'll work before you book.
A Certificate III: a full qualification
A Certificate III sits at level 3 of the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF). It is designed for skilled work and as a pathway to further study. It is made up of many units, often with work placement, rather than a single task.
Our three Fast-track Certificate III courses are:
HLT33115 Certificate III in Health Services Assistance
CHC30125 Certificate III in Early Childhood Education and Care
Course length is set by each provider. Weeks, timetables and intakes vary by school.
Which one suits you?
Want a bar or café job soon? An RSA for your state is the usual first step.
Looking at construction or labouring? You'll generally need a White Card.
Want a broader skill set in care, health or childcare? A Certificate III may suit you better.
Remember, Working Holiday visa holders (subclass 417 and 462) can study or train for up to 4 months in total. Read our guide to the 4-month rule and check your own conditions in VEVO.
