Royal National Park Day Trip from Sydney by Train & Ferry
Royal National Park, just south of Sydney, is one of the easiest big nature days you can do without a car. Sandstone cliffs, quiet beaches and part of a famous coastal walk — all reachable by public transport.
Getting there without a car
Train + ferry: take the train to Cronulla, then hop on the ferry to Bundeena. The crossing takes about 30 minutes, and ferries usually run hourly on the half-hour. It's often described as Australia's oldest commuter ferry.
Train only: several stations sit on the edge of the park — Loftus, Heathcote, Waterfall and Otford — handy if you want to start a walk from the west or south.
Check live timetables and fares on transportnsw.info before you go.
What to do
The Coast Track: the full track is about 26 km. For a day trip, try the Bundeena to Little Marley Beach section — about 6 km, around 3 hours return.
Wattamolla: an ocean beach plus a calm lagoon — a popular picnic spot.
Wedding Cake Rock: a famous white rock formation. It's unstable and fenced off, so admire it from behind the barrier.
Audley: a historic boatshed where you can hire a kayak or rowboat.
Stay safe
Most beaches are not patrolled by lifeguards and can have strong rip currents. If in doubt, stay out.
There's no drinking water on the walking tracks — carry plenty.
Mobile reception is patchy. Download a map before you leave.
Check NSW National Parks alerts for track closures or fire warnings on the day.
